The next gen superstock- Red Waka Vendetta

This is a little different from the content I usually put on here, but ever since I was a 5 year old living in Palmy I can recall looking forward to Saturday nights in summer, as it usually meant a trip to the showgrounds to see  legends like Dave Evans, Gary Parkes, Brian Anderson and the invaders from Stratford with names like Simpson, Tippett and Mercer do battle.

Those legends may since have long hung up their helmets, but a new crop have emerged and one of the new breed  is Wayne Hemi. A highly succeesful business owner, Hemi has chosen speedway and super stocks in particular as the arena for his toy and this is the latest and greatest to come from his stable. As with all forms of motorsport, those that can will always seek the best, and this is what speculatively a couple of hundred grand looks like, all for the love of a ‘bogan’ sport on dirt, with no real prize money and limited main stream media interest.

Hemi along with Malcolm Ngatai and perhaps Peter Rees are interesting to me as the are often victims of ‘E-hate’, where for whatever reason, online contributors tend to voice opinion on whatever they are doing. I’m quite fond of saying you have ‘made it’ when you are an E-lebrity, simply because you must be doing something people are talking about. Wayne Hemi certainly does get people talking.

Anyway, here are a few snaps for any other superstock lover out there of the new Red Waka Vendetta, a product of BSL racing in conjunction with the Hemi team.

Sitting up on its custom pneumatic jack setup, the car looks quite different to anything else currently racing, with sculpted body lines and and a very flowing look that indicates the level of thought that has gone into this car. If looks = speed, then not many other cars will touch the waka.

Yet to be scratched or impacted with concrete or steel. The fabrication on this car is absolutely top notch, something any shop would be proud to turn out. Brand new everything, you could pretty much eat off this car currently.

Seemed to be  a lot of interest from many drivers around the rear of the car and the setup in behind the drivers, perhaps some cleverly integrated parts to help with weight distribution and lower centre of gravity.

The Carbon Fibre look rims are quite a nice touch, never really seen it in speedway before and its often seen as either ‘Ricey’ in import circles, or when high quality ex japan show cases the care, love and precision that has gone into a car. I’d tend to think this is nod to the later.

And that’s about that really, didn’t get to see a wheel turn as even the weather gods seem to be against Waikaraka running a decent super stock meet.

Guess I’ll have to wait until Huntly now to see a good field class.

The stockies on Saturday night in Palmy is an institution with 3 and 4 generations going. I go back further than you and remember Charlie Bernstin from Wanganui and few more from that era. Remember the original Panthers Team. Love Wayne’s new redwaka. Wonder if long term it will have the same influence on design as the tank and subsequent tanks.

That it is Joyce, My father recently showed me some 70′s and early 80s photos of the great 432v and others of that era which I will try and scan and put up
